Weida

The town of Weida belongs to the district of Greiz and is located in the immediate vicinity. You can reach the town on foot, by bike or in 9 minutes by car. The townscape is dominated by the romantic Osterburg castle, which towers above the rooftops. It is definitely worth a visit and offers a museum, castle complex and regular events as well as a fantastic view over the town and the countryside. The castle was first mentioned in 1122 and was the seat of the bailiffs of Weida, Gera and Plauen, an important medieval noble family in the area of eastern Thuringia, northern Bohemia, south-western Saxony and parts of Upper Franconia. The Vogtland region between the upper Saale, Pleiße and Regnitz rivers is named after them. A bailiff – from the Latin advocatus, the summoned one – ruled and judged as the representative of a feudal lord on behalf of the sovereign.
