The zoo is located in the romantic Martinsgrund on the outskirts of Gera. Over 600 animals from 70 different species live there on an area of around 20 hectares. These are mainly native to the northern hemisphere, such as fallow deer, red deer, elk, reindeer, yaks, mouflons, lynx and the almost tiny Ouessant sheep. The bird world is represented by bearded owls, snowy owls, amazons, parakeets and nandus, among others.
The park railroad and a petting zoo are a particular highlight for children. The small train transports around 35,000 passengers a year on a track gauge of 600 millimetres. The 0.8-kilometre-long track runs from Martinsgrund station past a reservoir created during the construction of the railroad and over two bridges to Wolfsgehege station. It overcomes a gradient of 2.9%.
